Distinguished sixteenth-century Portuguese mapmaker. Cosmographer to the royal family. Known to have been living in Lisbon in 1565. His earliest known work is a planisphere dated 1519. This is followed by the planisphere dated 1544 in the possession of the Museo Galileo of Florence (inv. 946). His son Diego was also a mapmaker and lived and worked in England and Venice.
