Italian physicist, meteorologist and vulcanologist. At the University of Naples, began his career as professor of logic and metaphysics, later shifting to terrestrial physics and meteorology. From 1855 to 1896, headed the Vesuvian Observatory. Studied terrestrial magnetism, seismology, and atmospheric electricity. His name is associated with an electrometer and a sophisticated seismograph.
