Michel-Ferdinand d'Albert d'Ailly, Duc de Chaulnes, was a general, peer of France, and governor of Picardy. In parallel with his military career, he was an enthusiastic student of the physical sciences. He was elected an honorary member of the Académie Royale des Sciences. His inventions include a microscope and a dividing engine, and he suggested improvements in the construction of astronomical instruments.
