The word comes from the Arabic al-anbiq [vase]. It is a distilling apparatus with three parts: the cucurbit or flask contains the liquid to be distilled and is placed on the fire; above it is the dome—also called hat or helm—generally consisting of a single sphere, to which is attached the condenser (a water-cooled helical tube called a serpentine).
