Palace and convent located 40 kilometers from Madrid. Built by King Philip II (1527-1598) of Spain to celebrate his victory over the French at the battle of Saint Quentin (1557). The palace also contains a pantheon where the kings of Spain are buried, a collection of paintings, and a library that—in addition to precious books and manuscripts—possesses an armillary sphere built by Antonio Santucci (?-1613).
