Filter

Optical device, typically in the shape of a slide, that absorbs specific components of light and transmits the remainder. There are neutral filters, which simply attenuate light, color filters, which transmit a particular portion of the light spectrum, polarizing filters, which select one state of oscillation of the electromagnetic field, and so on. The filter is essential for improving specimen observation with compound microscopes.
