Magnetism
Magnetism

Distinctive property of certain bodies of attracting other bodies containing iron, cobalt, or nickel. The Greeks and Romans were familiar only with the fact that natural magnets attract iron. For many centuries afterward, broader and more precise knowledge of magnetic phenomena remained elusive. The first systematic discussion of magnetism did not come until William Gilbert's (1544-1603) De Magnete (London, 1600).
