Stable / unstable / indifferent equilibrium
Stable / unstable / indifferent equilibrium

These now obsolete definitions were illustrated with an example concerning a conic body. A cone resting on its base is in stable equilibrium, and in indifferent equilibrium when lying on its side. If, instead, it rests on its vertex, it will be in unstable equilibrium. When the rotation axis of a balance beam coincides with its center of gravity, we have an instance of indifferent equilibrium.
