The scion of an old French noble family, Cardinal d'Estrées was very young when he began his ecclesiastical career, in which he often acted as a mediator. Carried out important diplomatic missions in Italy, most notably to Venice. This explains the dedication by Vincenzo Coronelli (1650-1718) to d'Estrées of the terrestrial globe now at the Museo Galileo (inv. 2365).
