Manufacturer of mathematical instruments to King George III (1738-1820). Won international reputation for crafting celestial and terrestrial globes. Also built microscopes, dedicating some treatises to the construction and use of compound microscopes and the variable microscope (his Micrographia illustrata, London, 1746, is famous). Succeeded by his son George Junior (1750-1795).
