Henry Oldenburg was an enterprising Secretary of the Royal Society of London from 1662 to his death in 1677. He formed a deep, long-term friendship with Baruch Spinoza (1632-1677) and corresponded with Europe's greatest thinkers. In 1665, he founded the first European scientific journal, the Philosophical Transactions, which soon became a powerful medium for the diffusion of new scientific ideas.
