Dutch mathematician and physicist, prolific author of scientific papers. Specialized in electricity, magnetism, and meteorology. Professor of philosophy, logic, and mathematics at the Universities of Franeker and, later, Amsterdam. Member of the committee for the introduction of the decimal metric system in the Netherlands. Became the first president of the Dutch Royal Institution in 1808.
