Founder of a Dutch family of engravers and geographers. Settled in London, where he also became known as a scientific-instrument maker and type-founder. On his return to Holland, published many geographic maps, globes, atlases, and the maps of major travel narratives. Had two sons, both of whom - especially the elder, Jodocus Hondius Junior - became distinguished engravers and painters.
