Diffraction

A phenomenon occurring in the propagation of energy through wave motion. It was first described in the case of light by Francesco Maria Grimaldi (1618-1663) in 1665. When we examine the propagation of light at the edges of an opaque screen, we see that the rays of light encroach slightly on the shadow zone. This could not happen if light rays were perfectly straight.
