Plane table
Plane table

Surveying instrument also called Pretorian table after one of its presumed inventors, Johannes Praetorius (1537-1616). Composed of a horizontal table mounted on a tripod and fitted with a compass, shadow square, scale of degrees, and alidade. The user could plot the position angles of the sighted locations directly onto a sheet of paper and thus obtain an instant planimetric representation of the surface to be surveyed.
