Arbor (axle) whose ends carry vanes called pallets, set at an angle of c. 95-100°. The pallets are pushed in alternating directions by the teeth of the contrate wheel that are located in opposite positions. The verge is integral with the balance, the pendulum, or the crutch that moves the pendulum. When the verge is used in an alarm mechanism, it terminates in a hammer, usually with two heads that strike the bell from the inside.
