The anchor is the key component of three types of escapement: the recoil escapement, the dead-beat escapement (or Graham escapement), both for clocks, and the free escapement (or Mudge escapement) for watches. Anchors and the pallets at their ends were designed in a variety patterns to meet widely differing requirements.
