    • Free anchor escapement

This model illustrates how the free anchor escapement works.

This type of escapement is still used in almost all wristwatches. It is named for the anchor-shaped component placed between the escape wheel and the balance wheel. The anchor makes the teeth of the escape wheel lock and release, setting the balance wheel in motion. The contact between the anchor and the balance wheel is very brief, leaving the balance wheel free to rotate: this is why it is called “free anchor escapement.”
