The square-section instrument is housed in a wooden case covered in red leather with gilt tooling, complete with a lid. The sides of the caliper are inscribed with several scales: a division into 90 decreasing parts (probably a degree scale), a division into 4,200 equal parts, and three metal scales for iron, lead, and stone.
