    • Cylinder escapement with flywheel regulator

This model shows how the cylinder escapement works.

Invented by George Graham (1674-1751) in the early 18th century, this type of escapement is named for the cylindrical element used in place of the balance wheel rod. The teeth on the escape wheel impart reciprocating rotary motion to the balance wheel as they enter into and exit from the hollow part of the cylinder.
