This world map is drawn "upside down"—the lower part of the Italian boot is at the top, while Asia is placed on the left. This profusely detailed map gives the first known representation of several lands still unexplored at the time, drawing mainly on travel narratives such as Marco Polo's. The figures are enhanced by numerous and sometimes lengthy captions. The copy held by the Istituto e Museo di Storia della Scienza is a facsimile produced by Alinari, the Florentine photography firm. The original, made in Murano between 1457 and 1459 by Fra' Mauro, is in the Biblioteca Marciana of Venice.
