After the discovery of electromagnetic phenomena, and with the invention of the electromagnet, the first telegraph systems, electric motors and electric generators were developed. While telegraphy progressed rapidly from the mid-19th century on, electric motors remained basically laboratory curiosities, at least until the end of the century.
