Starting from the late 18th century, studies in electricity and magnetism, which had been basically qualitative, began to employ new measurement instruments such as electrometers, galvanometers, magnetometers. In 1800 the electric battery was introduced by Alessandro Volta (1745-1827). Twenty years later the discovery of the effect of electric current on magnets opened the way to electromagnetism and its applications.
