Like items inv. 3779, inv. 3780 and inv. 3781, this is a part of an instrument for distillation, one of the fundamental operations in alchemy and chemistry. The dome (or hat) is the upper part of the alembic, serving as a cover and collecting the vapors produced by distillation. This specimen dates from the eighteenth century.
